The 2nd of the JOG inshore races and this time I’m double-handed with Neil the owner of Paracelsus, the Sigma 38 that is berthed next to Marta. This weeks start was a little earlier and the tide was not favourable for us to make an early morning dash to Cowes. So we sensibly went over the evening before and had a beer in the local hostelry.
After a pretty cold night we woke to lovely blue skies. We rigged for some possible spinnaker work and set off for the start. The wind was Northerly and stronger than forecast. We hoisted the main as we made our way out of the river and headed down to the start line, this week we were the only 38 entered so no match racing. There was a strong east bound tide and I miss judged the start leaving us 30 seconds late for the line. We did our best to catch the fleet and were doing ok until we passed the forts. Most of the boats hoisted a kite and gradually started to pull away. The wind was around 110°T with the wind gusting to 23 knots, we stuck with our number 2. We rounded the mark just ahead of Jibe who had started 20 mins after us, not so good. The wind angle was better for our sail plan on the return leg and we had only lost 8 mins to Jibe when we crossed the line.It was a long reach there and back and we only managed 9th of 12 in class. our double handed result was a little better 3rd of 8.
Yarmouth in 3 weeks hopefully a few more Sigma’s to race.
